The "Sport of Mothering” is an exercise program preparing for childbirth and the demands of mothering much like an athlete would prepare for an event.
The act of birthing doesn’t need to be taught - it has happened naturally for years. However, we can “train” our bodies physically and emotionally for the upcoming event, which will make all the difference in our perception and performance.
Mothering begins with the plan to conceive, and continues with carrying the baby to term, and raising your child. The Sport of Mothering is an exercise program that follows you through these stages. Regular exercise before, during, and after pregnancy can prepare your body for labor and the demands of a new baby. Caring for a newborn can be stressful and physically demanding, so it helps to be fit and strong. You are an athlete and your child is the biggest reward after the event.
Pre-season Training = PRECONCEPTION
Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center offers one on one personal training in our office or in your home and /or our “Get Moving” program to improve your fitness before you become pregnant..
In Season Training = PRENATAL
Join other mothers “in training” for daytime or evening classes facilitated by one of our physical therapists. The beauty of these classes is the free flowing discussions between Moms at various stages of pregnancy while performing the key exercises to prepare for the physical demands ahead. Unlike some exercise classes, the physical therapist present will modify positions or activities based on individual abilities. Class size is limited to allow personal attention. Women at any stage of pregnancy are welcome and classes are ongoing.
