Orthotics

 What are Orthotics?

A foot orthotic is an insert that is placed in the shoe to decrease stresses to the foot and lower extremity.

What are they used for?

Orthotics are used in the management of many common injuries, aches and pains. These include plantar fasciitis, heel pain, shin splints, patellar (or kneecap) dysfunction and knee, hip or back pain. Orthotics are used to improve foot biomechanics.

How do I know if I need Orthotics?

Ask your health care professional to assess your foot mechanics to see if Orthotics are right for you. He or she will check for structural deformities of the foot and lower leg, and also check your gait while walking or running. Individuals who overly pronate (or bear too much weight on the inside or arch part of the foot) are good candidates for Orthotics.

How are Orthotics made?

Custom Orthotics are fabricated in a variety of ways. Professionally trained individuals can fabricate Orthotics using a grinder and special materials.

Can I wear Orthotics in any shoes?

Yes, most Orthotics will fit into a variety of shoes and can even be made for specialty footwear such as ski boots.

Do I need a doctor's prescription for Orthotics?

It is always recommended to check with your physician regarding any pain or injury you feel. If you have any questions regarding whether or not Orthotics are right for you, please call us. We would be happy to discuss Orthotics with you.

Foot orthotic devices are a popular and effective method used in treating pain or injuries and are available at the Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center.
